Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 
The word of God tells us to be joyful always, that it is God's will for us. But it is a choice. You will never have the perfect set of circumstances in every situation of every day of your life but you can have joy every day of your life. Joy is not found in the external; it is found in the internal. It is found inside of you in your spirit.
These verses have a key to being joyful always. That key is to pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances. By sincerely praying continually you are in constant communication with God. You are aligning yourself with Him all day long. By giving thanks in all circumstances you are continually submitting yourself to God's authority in your life and you are confessing your absolute trust in Him.
By purposely doing what encourages your spirit, joy will begin to well up on the inside of you, a joy that does not depend on circumstances.
Prayer: God, I know I'm not joyful all the time. Please give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I may know your love. Change my heart so that I can have your joy on the inside. Today I choose to do what encourages my spirit and brings your joy to my heart. Amen
